Hattiesburg, MS - Researchers at The University of Southern Mississippi School of Polymers and High Performance Materials received a National Science Foundation Accelerating Innovation Research award to commercialize a novel, biodegradable oil dispersant that also prevents oil fouling of coastal substrates such as aquatic birds and sea grasses. The dispersant is derived from soybeans and other natural products. It was developed by PI Dr. Robert Y. Lochhead, Professor and Director of The School of Polymers and High Performance Materials, and co-PIs Profs. Sarah E. Morgan and Daniel A. Savin as part of an NSF Rapid Response proposal awarded after the Deep Water Horizon Oil Spill. Both programs stemmed from the NSF Partnership for Innovation program directed by Dr. Lochhead. Noetic Technologies, Inc. is a partner in this program and will lead the early stage product development process.
